3 Tips for Surviving a One-Way Video Interview

3 Tips for Surviving a One-Way Video Interview3 Tips for Surviving a One-Way Video InterviewBurgeoning bankers beware- recruiting techniques continue to shift towards the electronic. Financial services giant JPMorgan announced that it will be drastically cutting down its presence at college career fairs and will be moving the entry phase of its recruitment process to a one-way video interview (i.e., pre-recorded, not with a person on the other side) accompanied by games meant to reveal behavioral patterns. I cant speak to the efficacy that games would have in predicting behavior attributes, although I admit to being skeptical. What I can speak to, however, are one-way video interviews. In short Theyre awful. Companies really like them because, instead of spending 30 minutes on the phone with every potential candidate, the candidates submit their pre-recorded interviews on a rolling basis to be watching at the hiring managers convenience. The format they take for the candidate, however , is an anxiety-inducing nightmare. There is no person on the other end of the line on a one-way video interview- I know, right? So its less like an interview and more like a virtual, visual questionnaire. Youre given a question, given a set time to think about the question (approximately 30 to 60 seconds), and then your camera turns on and you answer. Within a strict time limit (approximately one minute). Oftentimes, with only one take. Ill reiterate One-way video interviews are awful. But you better get used to them, because theyre here to stay. Luckily, Ive got some tips to making sure that you make it through in one piece.Look the Part- and in the Right DirectionA video interview is still an interview- so dress like youre going to one. Although I suppose, if you really wanted to, you could ostensibly wear sweatpants with your shirt and tie, so long as youre shooting from the waist up. I wouldnt recommend it, though. Get your webcam set up and pointed to a spot with a relatively neutral background. (Blank wall or classy painting- probably fine. Dirty laundry piled on your bed- definitely not fine.) I actually place my laptop on a sturdy stack of books to get a better angle, like when you lift your phone up to take a selfie. Make sure youre well-lit but theres no lens flare and that youve kicked your roommate out until youre done. One-way video interviews are usually done on a rolling basis, which means youve got the time to set yourself up right- and work your best angles. And dont forget to look into the camera, not at yourself Drag the window with your face in it nearer to the webcam if you cant control yourself. Eye contact is important, even if youre not technically making eye contact with anyone yet.Practice, Practice, PracticeIn my experience, the average time to answer a question on a video interview was about a minute. Considering that time limit accompanied broad questions like, How do you believe this position fits in with the kollektiv at large?- which also seemed specific for a first round interview- I felt the time crunch hard. And you cant rush through your answer either because the first rule of being on camera is Speak slowly. Usually, I only had one take to get it right- which is fine in person but, with the clock literally ticking, it felt more like being in 8 Mile. So whats a girl to do if her palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy?(Im so sorry.)Practice. Write up a series of questions you think youre likely to hear. Ask your friends and family for questions theyve been asked in interviews. Check out Vaults sample questions- were here for more than striking fear into the heart of those facing video interviews, after all. When youve got enough, set a timer for one minute, then rehearse your answers aloud until you have them down pat. Sounding a little scripted and over-rehearsed is infinitely better than falling prey to time-induced panic or- worse- getting cut off in the middle of your sentence. The more you pr actice having to answer questions concisely as opposed to comprehensively, the better youll get at it.Dont PanicCrucial advice from the voreingestellt repository of all knowledge and wisdom. A person can read panic through a video like one might read a book, and hiring managers wont be impressed to see you very obviously freaking out. Being calm in confident in any situation is critical to life in the working world. My advice? Keep your perspective. Video interviewing is new- the process is unfamiliar, and youre not the only person potentially struggling with it. If you went over your time, shake it off- a dozen other people probably did, too. So many of your fellow candidates were definitely looking at themselves and not the camera, and somebody out there certainly sweated profusely through the entire interview. You should try to avoid mistakes, of course, but almost no one is a pro at video interviews, which means your huge glaring mistake will simply be one tree in a forest. Just answer the questions as best you can, and then wow them in person at the call back. This anfangsbuchstabe interview is less about being perfect and more about letting the company know that youre interested, enthusiastic, and can communicate effectively. So just breathe.

Board Presidents Resume Spinning a Resume from Web Sources

Board Presidents Resume Spinning a Resume from Web SourcesBoard Presidents Resume Spinning a Resume from Web SourcesAlex Douzet had many online profiles, but no written resume Certified professional resume writer Irene Marshall swept his Web trail to create an effective executive resume.Alex Douzet had no need for a resume in many years. He still worked at Ladders (the company he helped to found in 2003), he welchesnt looking for a job, and his LinkedIn profile was all the career promotion he cared to pursue. But he decided he needed to put together an official resume to represent his career and achievements.Turns out he already had the makings of a resume and so do you and nearly everyone else. Scattered across the Web are the details of your career in bits and bytes that in are the pieces of a comprehensive resume. To an experienced resume writer corporate biographies, alumni sites, countless social network profiles, news coverage of your personal and corporate achievements, even r egulatory documents and corporate collateral can comprise a thorough accounting of your professional career.Using your online profiles as semi-raw material can save a lot of time and effort in creating a new resume, but consider it a skeleton, said Irene Marshall, a certified professional resume writer who works with Ladders and helped Douzet fashion a resume. A scattered online presence lacks focus and wont represent who you are or what you can do, she said. It also presents the risk of misrepresenting or embarrassing you. From the about us page at companies you no longer work for to negative news articles and social network sites with embarrassing photos, the data track you left during your high-profile career will not only lead recruiters and potential employers to your gate, it may scare them away.Marshall, an experienced career coach and resume writer who spent four years as a recruiter at Robert Half International before teaming with Ladders, was able to fashion a full resume f or Douzet based on those documents and a brief conversation. The result I look good in that resume, Douzet said. I felt that Irene had done a great job at presenting and positioning my achievements over the past 15 years. Hiring Irene was like hiring a top-tier advertising agency to produce my marketing campaign.Meat on the bonesMarshall began reconstructing Douzets career by reviewing his LinkedIn profile, which she said was detailed but not resume-ready. It served more as a timeline and added some meat to the bones of data she found on the Web, she said. Its often a good idea to write a resume from the bottom up starting with information about education, early career and other information that tends not to change or be drastically restated to show how they apply to a current job search, Marshall said.Whether its your resume or someone elses, you have to know how to ask the right questions, Marshall said. Since the assumption was that the resume should reflect the most valuable thin gs he does now for Ladders, his role in managing operations was just as important as his role as co-founder.Co-founder and president are two very different roles in a company the strategy was that we had to address both, she said. His profile said he helped establish Ladders. What did you do? I had to ask him. He wrote the business plan and raised $800,000 and then another $7 million. That was good. Did you hire and manage the key staff? Well, yes he did. Thats important.A startup can be two guys in a garage, but when you look at the rapid growth of Ladders, he and Marc (Cenedella, Ladders founder and CEO), must have hired the right people around them, Marshall said. In Silicon Valley, especially during the dotcom crash, you saw a lot of companies coming down because there were all these guys who didnt know how to hire the right people around them.If Douzet had been looking for a job as chief strategy officer or rainmaker for another startup, it would have been more important to focu s on the ability to put together a credible business plan and raise money, Marshall said. As president, Douzet has the head of every business line reporting to him, responsibility for all the companys 300-plus employees and full profit-and-loss responsibility.Marshall also added Douzets fluency in several languages and his history working in France and England, items she would normally omit or conceal, because they speak to his role directing Ladders expansion in Europe and Asia.A dispassionate eyeThe finished product impressed and even surprised Douzet.Even if I had used tips and guideline for resume writing I could have never produced such a great marketing document on my own, he said. But the true value for the executive was the power of a dispassionate and critical eye on his personal history someone to edit and delete the pieces of his personal history he himself might have been unwilling to dismiss. The key for me is that resume writers are emotionally detached from the product they are promoting and therefore can be more objective in positioning yourself and highlighting your main achievements, he said. This resulted in a higher quality resume

A Realistic Robotic Hand

A Realistic Robotic Hand A Realistic Robotic Hand A Realistic Robotic HandVikash Kumar, a University of Washington doctoral student in computer science and engineering, is part of a gruppe of researchers making great strides in developing a robot for a menschenwrdig body part that is one of the most difficult areas to replicate with the same functionality the hand.Kumar grew interested in robotics after becoming disillusioned with the study of mathematics because it was only about numbers and equations on the board and on paper. The only way I could appreciate those things was if I could use them in a real-world application. Thats when I saw robotics as a means to channel all my learning into something tangible, Kumar says.I saw robotics as a means to channel all my learning into something tangible.Vikash Kumar,University of WashingtonAfter earning his bachelors and masters degrees at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, he enrolled at UW to study for his doctorate working i n the universitys Movement Control Lab under the supervision of Professor Emanuel Todorov. The five-fingered hand he and Todorov have built is a breakthrough because it can perform tasks that require highly dexterous manipulation, which traditionally has been very difficult for robots, plus it also can learn from its own experience and build upon that learning without ongoing philanthropisch direction. Most work with commercial robots has involved software engineers imagining every movement to perform a specific task and then programming those movements. Because of machine-learning algorithms that help the robot model both the basic physics involved and plan which actions it should take to achieve the desired result, the robot gets progressively more adept each time it performs a specific task, eventually learning by experience to respond as quickly as, or even faster than, a human hand.A five-fingered robot hand can learn object manipulation on its own. Image University of Washington Starting in 2011, Kumar spent two and a half years designing the hand, which has 40 tendons, 24 joints, and more than 130 sensors. Then he turned to working with different methods of controlling the hand. I eventually ended up with combining both optimal control and the learning-based method because combining them has produced a much better result, he explains. The benefit is that the kind of task that used to take thousands and thousands of trials of iterations now takes orders of magnitude less trial and less data, and this combination gives us an efficient way of learning, he adds. The eventual goal is to have a functional equivalent of the human hand. The grand vision is to have robots mimic more closely what nature has done in creating what an animal can do, he said. We are on the right track. It will be just a matter of time before we get there, says Kumar. Now we have tools good at solving one particular job a copy machine, a dishwasher, a washing machine. Soon you realize that every task you have to solve is asking for anotlageher piece of hardware. Thats why a robotic butler is something in the grand vision of robotics because that is one machine that does all the household chores for you, Kumar says. Thats why its important to get a functional equivalent of a human hand because the human hand is capable of solving various different tasks its capable of peeling a label, capable of loading a dishwasher, capable of assembling IKEA furniture. But any one robot right now is good at only one of those. To date, the team has demonstrated local learning with the robot, meaning that the hand learns from and improves by performing a task repeatedly. The next step is to tackle global learning, in other words, have the robot figure out how to perform a task with an unfamiliar object or in a new situation it hasnt faced before.Kumar envisions endless possible end uses eventually for the basic technology, everything from defusing explosive devices to prosthetics to sp ace or marine exploration to disaster recovery to health care. But his teams focus will continue to be on developing the fundamental building blocks that underlie all the possible uses, making sure that all the steps involved are in the right sequence. As excited as he is about the breakthrough work his team is doing, he is more excited to see where other scientists around the world may take the basic capability and begin to collaborate and combine their individual expertise for specific uses. He acknowledges that its not something that is going to happen overnight. Its not going to be one day or one month where we say it doesnt work until it works. Its a gradual process, probably five to ten years, Kumar says. But he does expect to see more results starting to come pretty soon as more people jump in now that the problem seems more tractable. We will start to have small but gradual progress from now onwards.Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer.

Cosmos former EIC Being gutsy almost always wins the day

Cosmos former EIC Being gutsy almost always wins the dayCosmos former EIC Being gutsy almost always wins the dayChances are if you picked upCosmopolitanmagazine at any point between the years of 1998 and 2012, Kate White had something to do with which celebrity was featured on the titelbild. Its been six years since White left her post as Editor-in-Chief at the iconic mag, but if you think she slowed down, you would be quite wrong. In plus-rechnen to writing12 thrillers and murder mysteries she has also shared her vast career advice in books after years of climbing the ladder in the always crazy, rapidly paced world of womens magazines - she also served as EICat Redbook and Working Woman, among others, before Cosmo. The New York Times best-selling author is now re-releasing an updated version of her 1995 career playbookWhy Good Girls Dont Get Ahead But Gutsy Girls Do for a millennial audience asThe Gutsy Girl Handbook Yur Manifesto for Success. When she wrote the book over 20 years ag o, she assumed that once her young daughter at the time graduated college, women wouldnt need the kind of advice in their careers but alas here we are.Even though women have come far, there are still hurdles to cross, she said.White realized the advice could still resonate now, with a few updates, after another writer said she owed her career to Whites book. She sat down with Ladders to discuss her long career and what she wants young women working today to know.On why she updated the bookI guess that, and just hearing people say things made me realize that maybe there was still an opportunity for women to learn from getting a bit of a nudge in terms of being gutsy. Sometimes there are moments where that good girl message overrides your gutsiness and you hesitate, or you feel like, maybe I should be a little bit nicer here, so it just landseemed like the right time.On the best way for women to get gutsy in their careersWell, I think that the great thing about being gutsy is that it almost always wins the day, so if you test the waters, whether its speaking up in a meeting and sharing an idea, or negotiating a better starting salary, or any of those things - once you win, its such reinforcement. Even if you win in a little way, its a small step. It encourages you to be gutsier going forward. So, I think, just keep doing it, because even if youre doing it in little ways, it really pays off for you. And, as I look back at my career, one of the things I worried about sometimes in terms of being gutsy was that it was gonna blow up in my face. But the advantage of having had a long career is that you see it rarely blew up in my face. It almost always advanced things. On how perfection can hurt you in the endI think theres a sense sometimes that you really need to make things perfect. That you need to dot every i and cross every t, and that you want to be prepared. And certainly, a lot of that is true. But its really important sometimes to just get things out there. A nd one of the things that people, certainly, in the tech world would tell you, or any kind of innovation is that you learn through what your customers tell you.You dont want to go out there sloppy, but get out there and see what the response is, and then you can begin to make modifications. So, I think what you have to do is just ask yourself Am I sitting on this too long? Am I trying to perfect it too much? Am I telling myself, this isnt the right time, I better wait for the right time. All those things that may be keeping you from taking action. And sometimes its just better to just go out there.Lets say, you need a new job. Youve been staying too long someplace. Instead of polishing your resume, which is step number one, make a call to someone you know at an organization youve thought of joining and say, Id love to do an informational interview with you, or maybe its someone that person has a connection with. Do anything you can to just get off Square One.On how women can stop trying to be people pleasersFirst of all, knowing that you cant please everybody. That there are going to be people that dislike you for weird reasons, like, maybe you remind them of the sister who bit off her Barbies head when you were playing. And so, theres nothing you can do to fix that. The old adage was, Dont go for people to like you, go for peoples respect. And I do think theres a certain amount of sense in that. Ideally, having people like you helps you get ahead.Theres something to be said for wanting to win hearts and minds. But knowing that you cant win all of them, I think is important. And what you dont want to do is become this kind of people pleaser whose cheeks hurt at the end of the day from smiling too much. Let that go.For the people who are on your level, you want them to know youll support their ideas in meetings, you wont gossip about them, you wont betray their confidences, and ideally, that will be enough for them to respect you.In terms of your boss, you re ally want to do your best to make your boss like you. As the great guy I interviewed, whos an executive, said, Your three goals in work are to1) dazzle your boss, 2) dazzle your boss, and 3) do a good job. I think, sometimes we feel our boss is like this adversary and we need to kind of, work around our boss. I think the best thing you can do is show your boss, Im on your team, Ill do whatever you need me to do. Really do everything you can to please your boss, even if it means kissing butt sometimes. On dealing with failureI really feel that guys do a better job of dealing with failure because they reframe it to make it less negative and not personal. So, when you leave a meeting where your idea got shot down, a guy is often likely to think, theyre idiots, or Im gonna have to reposition it. Whereas, we women sometimes leave thinking, Oh my God, they hated me. And I think we have to be better at one, accepting that failure is just a normal part of business and life, it happens and y ou learn from it.On sexual harassment in the era of MeTooI so empathize with every single woman whose story I read because Ive had it happen to me, and the irony is that, I was thinking about an incident where I was jumped in a cab by a publisher. Really jumped. And at the time, I did what women were encouraged to do because you didnt have a lot of recourse I used humor to deal with it. I was like, Oh, come on, hey, what are you doing, hahaha. I hated the experience, but nothing bad happened. Yet, all unterstellung years later, I look back and I realize, that the print run for the book that I was doing for this publisher was dropped a couple of months later. And I wondered, Wow, could that have been because of his annoyance that I didnt reciprocate? So, I certainly relate to what all these women have gone through.I remember something that this really great woman in HR said to me once. Shed dealt with things herself, not only as a woman but as a woman of color. And she said to me, You have to ask yourself, what do you want to come out of the situation? And sometimes that may be, not blowing it up. So, if you can deal with it on a very local level, and say to the guy, Look, I really dont like it when I speak to me that way, please stop. That may be all you need to do. And then you havent escalated it. And so, if youre justified in escalating it, it goes back to the question of what do you want to have happen here? And maybe what you want to have happen, is not to let things become too known at that point.Whats really important is to loop somebody else in, so you have someone who will say, Yes, she told me this, it happened to her. So youve got that evidence. The good nachrichten is, unlike years ago, where you could try to pursue it and all you were met with were deaf ears, I think today, companies really are on alert about this.On what to do if youre struggling to find your passionThe best way is not to sit there with a legal pad and go, Ok, I like this, but I dont like that. Rather, the best way is to go out in the world and just have as many experiences as possible and wait for the Eureka moment. And by that, I mean, having lunch with people you knew from college, or your early work years who are doing different things. Get them to talk about what they do. Ask to meet themat their work environment, so you can kinda see what they do. Go to plays and galleries, travel, expose yourself on the internet, just go down the rabbit hole of the internet. And sometimes then, you have that Eureka moment. On the power of mentoringI think the best thing is to have mentors who will not just offer you advice but will open doors for you. And there are some studies that show that men are more likely to be promoted through their mentors because they use their mentors as sponsors, and that women sometimes get stuck a bit in using mentors as advice-givers. And theres nothing wrong with asking a mentor to guide you a bit. But ultimately, what you really wa nt is someone to really help you understand the field, and what steps you must take, and then, if possible, open doors. On which celebrity shed wished shed been able to feature on the cover during her time thereThe one person who I never got to do, that I wanted to do, was Jennifer Aniston. She had been on the cover of Cosmo before I got there, but I could not get her again. And it drove me a little nuts. She was a real Cosmo girl, and it probably wouldve been good for her to be on.The one person I wanted that I didnt get on, that Im glad I didnt get on was Gwyneth Paltrow. Because though I really like her, I dont think she wouldve been a perfect fit. So, probably the Gods were looking down at me by not letting me get her. But I think for pretty much everybody else, we got them. And what I used to always say is that if you were on the cover of Cosmo, you were always on the cover of Vogue within a year. Because they clearly looked at our newsstand numbers.

Do you want to be more positive

Do you want to be mora positiveDo you want to be more positiveIs the world getting better orworse?2017 was considered the worst year ever until 2018 came along. We will probably think the same of 2019.So, when asurveyasked people if they thought the world was getting better or worse, the results were unsurprisingly devastating. Hardly anyone has a positive outlook - only 10% in Sweden and 6% in the US believe the world is in better shape than it was.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe late Swedish academicHans Roslingwas concerned about this distortion - statical facts offer a different, more positive view. But, the constant news reports on violence, natural catastrophes, terrorist attacks, and wars tint our vision. As Hans Rosling said, Theres no room for facts when our minds are occupied by fear.Maybe its elendlage reality that is broken - what we need is a new lens. The brig ht and dark sides of perceptionThe worlds been coming to an end for a long time. The hundred years war was supposed to erase humanity from the face of the earth, seven centuries ago. People thought the same about World War I. And then came World War II. Something similar happened with pandemics - from the Bubonic Plague to Cholera, to AIDS, each outbreak was perceived as the worst ever.As Franklin Pierce Adams pointed out, Nothing is more responsible for the good old days than a schwimmbad memory. We have a distorted lens when it comes to assessing reality. Optimistic and pessimistic people see the world as something static - its either perfect or broken.Extreme pessimism can turn into fatalism - we feel powerless observing how the world is going down. Even worse, thinking that institutions are broken can lead to radicalism - people want to take action in their hands, and drain the swamp.Optimism cancloud our self-awareness too - it makes us believe we are better than we actually are. Extreme positivism makes us ignore basic facts or underestimate risks. It leads to poor decision making or inaction. As Mahatma Gandhi said, A man is but the product of his thoughts. They appreciate the world in black or white terms - they either see whats right or whats broken. But improving our views requires more than identifying faulty beliefs - we must borrow a new glass. As Donald Robertson, the author ofHow to Think Like a Roman Emperor, explains, therapy approaches have moved from coaching people to identify faulty beliefs to encouraging them to try a new lens.In thisexciting interviewwith Daily Stoic, Robertson shares what he discovered in his therapy practice. Early on, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) placed a lot of emphasis on identifying ones incorrect beliefs - people had to question those and replace them with more healthy and rational ways of thinking. The next generation of therapists realized that changing our beliefs, not only is difficult, but not necessary. What matters is changing our relationship with life events - we must learn to use a new lens. The world cannot be understood without numbers. But the world cannot be understood with numbers alone.? HansRoslingTake our thoughts, for example. We must learn to look at them, not through them. When your thoughts become your lens, your reality becomes foggy, asI wrote here.Defusionis a term coined byAcceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)to describe the ability to separate ourselves from our thoughts. Fusion, on the other hand, is when we let our thoug hts distort our vision. The same applies to effective emotion management. Emotional reappraisal - understanding and reframing our emotions - is more effective than suppressing or letting them go wild.Cognitive distancingis a powerful psychological strategy - its about becoming more aware of our thoughts and seeing them from a distance. If you believe the world is either rose-tinted or dark and gloomy, its because of the lenses you use. Distancing from events makes you understand the world is not good or bad - your glasses make it look that way.As Epictetus said, Its not things that upset us but rather our opinions about things.Modern therapy drew some inspiration from the Stoics.Marcus Aurelius addressed the need to separate our judgments from external events. We must suspend certain value judgments responsible for unhealthy behaviors. When something makes you feel that your life is getting worse, remember Epictetus words - its not things, but the glasses you use, that upset you .Wearing a progression lens will help you understand the world is dynamic, not static - pay attention to whats getting better, not just to whats terrible. It will help you observe the good without being blinded by it either.A progress lens helps us see theevolution - we focus on improving instead of complaining about whats broken.Try the progresslensI have found that intellectuals hate progress. And intellectuals who call themselves progressive really hate progress. - StevenPinkerWe have a hard time accepting the world is getting better. And we are clueless about it.As Steven Pinker explains on hisamazing TED talk, Some intellectuals have responded with fury to my bookEnlightenment Now, saying first how dare he claims that intellectuals hate progress, and second, how dare he claims that there has been progress. The need to dramatize our lives creates an opportunity for others to become oursaviors. Weve turned scientists, leaders, gurus, and the media into heroes. When the world se ems about to collapse, experts can save us by providing clarity. But, you dont need others to see life clearly. Wearing a progress lens will provide you with a sense of autonomy - you can focus on improving things without expecting anyone else to save you.Acknowledging progress doesnt mean being nave. Its the ability to compare your current status with where you were before. Its about focusing on the improvement, not on whats missing.Going back to my original questionsIs the world getting better or worse?Steven Pinker arrived at the same conclusion that Hans Rosling did. If we compare statistical facts, the world has become much, much better when it comes to life expectancy, prosperity, health, peace, safety, and more. When we watch the news reporting natural catastrophes or wars fatalities, we immediately think the world is going down the sink. But, facts show us that the world is getting safer. That doesnt mean ignoring tragedies like school shootings in the US or the recent hate c rime in New Zealand. Acknowledging progress is not idealistic or utopian view.We have to trust our human ability to improve if we want humanity to continue making progress.Interestingly enough, most of us are feeling better in spite of our negative outlook about the world. People are feeling happier across the board. In 86 percent of the worlds countries, happiness has increased in recent decades.Acknowledging progress doesnt mean ignoring whats wrong - it energizes us to keep working on getting better and better. Wearing a progress lens will help you integrate all aspects of life by providing a sense of autonomy. Youll see whats broken as a problem to be solved, not as something to feel bad about it.Are you making progress?Life will never be perfect - you can focus on whats broken or acknowledge progress instead.A distorted lens makes us focus on one side the story - we magnify either the negative or the positive. Wearing a progress lens helps us acknowledge our improvement. We know some things are wrong, butruminatingsad events or past mistakes doesnt help us move forward. So, which lens do you use to observe your own life?Appreciating the good is not conformism. Its about embracing our dynamic and fluid nature - progress makes us focus on the journey, not just on one particular stop. Personal growth requires understanding that we are not changing but becoming.Try wearing a progress lens. The world is not perfect, but every day its getting better and better. When you feel stuck, remember that.I leave you with one last thought by Steven PinkerWe will never have a perfect world, and it would be dangerous to seek one. But theres no limit to the betterments we can attain if we continue to apply knowledge to enhance human flourishing.Gustavo Razzettiis a change instigator who helpspurpose-driven organizationscreate positive change. 1 in 5 Americans dont feel safe at work, survey finds

1 in 5 Americans dont feel safe at work, survey finds1 in 5 Americans dont feel safe at work, survey findsAccording to the new American Working Conditions Survey, many employees in the U.S. dont feel safe or comfortable in their workplaces.Created by the Rand Corp., Harvard Medical School, and the University of California, Los Angeles, the report surveyed more than 3,000 U.S. workers to help policymakersunderstand whats it like to be an American employee today. What they found is that many of us are stressed and under a variety of external pressures that take a toll.1 in 5 employees have a hostile workplaceOne in five employees surveyed said they were exposed to a hostile or threatening social environment at work, a number the researchers called disturbingly high. More than half of employees said they faced unpleasant and potentially hazardous conditions. But not all employees are being exposed to these conditions at the same rate.Researchers found that your likeliness to get harassed split along age, gender, and education lines. Younger women were more likely to experience unwanted sexual attention at work, while younger men without a college degree were more likely to face verbal abuse and humiliating behavior.Perhaps young women recognize these predatory dangers. A separate pollby Morning Consult in partnership with theNew York Timesfound that younger women policed how they interacted with men more than older women did at work. For that poll, self-policing meant younger women would be more likely to turn down off-hours drinking with male co-workers.Taxing demands at workWhen your boss needs that report yesterday, deadlines can be emotionally exhausting to meet. Two-thirds of Americans said they worked tight deadlines, and one in four said that they had too little time to do their job. When you lack the time to complete the job on the clock, it carries over into your personal life. Half of the employees surveyed said they do work in their free time to complete work demands.Getting flexibility at work differed depending on gender, youth, and degrees. Women reported experiencing more difficulty than men in getting time off work to take care of family matters, younger employees had a harder time getting a flexible schedule than older ones, and workers with a college degree said they got more schedule flexibility than those without that degree. There was one bright spot, however. Four out of five workers said they found their work meaningful in some way, whether that meant feeling satisfied or useful or experiencing some sense of personal accomplishment. But overall, what this report shows is that when it comes to the American workplace, theres still a ways to go before its a safe environment for all.
